I'm too sensitive though and if you're a parent reading this, I'd certainly think twice before letting my child enjoy this.Insurgent picks up where Divergent left off, with Tris, Tobias, Caleb, Peter, and Marcus heading out of the city to Amity headquarters where some members of the broken-up Abnegation have gone for protection. If unhappy situations don't put you off then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There is only so much bleakness I find enjoyable. I read a plot summary and decided to stop listening immediately when I did. It turned so bleak that I simply couldn't stick with it anymore. I thought the first book was interesting, the characters well rounded, but eventually it became the book equivalent of an ego shooter game for me. What was most disappointing about Veronica Roth’s story? As for Veronica Roth, I'd probably tread carefully from now on. I thought Emma Galvin did a wonderful job reading so I'd definitely try her work again. Would you try another book written by Veronica Roth or narrated by Emma Galvin? My niece is reading the paper version and struggling with the style but Emma just makes it so real and brings out the whole rollercoaster action. Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances? How does this one compare?Įmma narrated Divergent - both really bring Triss to life.ĭo you think Insurgent needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?Įmma's performance absolutely makes this book. Also Triss' PSTD and her need to try and sort everything could have been more rounded - an opportunity missed. I think some of Tobias' own issues could have been better explained (Read the book "Four" first and it will help). I have listened to this twice (unusual for me to do this) so that says it was enjoyable. How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable? I think this book was written quickly and there a few mistakes - people mentioned as present when we knew they were somewhere else. Is there anything you would change about this book?

If you enjoyed the Hunger Games, then this book shares much of its tone and themes, I recommend it!

The reader is very good, I find female narrators a little shrill sometimes, but Emma Gavin has an expressive and pleasant voice, and she convinced as Beatrice. I believe the film is already in production, but something like: 'In a world where your choices are made for you, one girl will learn to think for herself.' If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be? It'd have to be Beatrice, as it's told in the first person we get to know her pretty well! Which character – as performed by Emma Gavin – was your favourite?

The initiation process Beatrice goes through to join her chosen faction. Beatrice's world is convincing and intriguing, and I enjoyed the way the story progressed, revealing more about the factions and their relationships as the book goes on.
